Standard Cribs

Once you decide to create your nursery, you can begin to think about what type of crib you would like to have. There are many different types of cribs available. The most basic and least expensive type of crib is the standard crib. However, don’t let the relative inexpensiveness of standard cribs fool you. They are functional and fun. You can find standard cribs in every type of finish and material available.

Learning About Standard Cribs

There are 2 types of standard cribs. One is a crib with a single drop side, and the other is a crib with double drop sides. The crib with double drop sides will tend to be a little more expensive than the crib with single drop sides.

Once you pick the type of standard crib you want, the possibilities are endless. You can find standard cribs made out of wood, painted or stained any color you can think of. You can find standard cribs made out of plastic or metal. It all depends on what you think is right for your nursery.

As with any crib, make sure that your standard crib meets all minimum safety standards. These include a secure drop side looking latch and a mattress that fits snugly in the crib.
Also, when the drop side is lowered it should be at least nine inches above the mattress support. When the drop side is raised, it should be at least twenty six inches above the mattress support.

Standard Crib Mattresses

Standard crib mattresses come in many different styles, too. You can find standard crib mattresses and toddler mattresses in high end materials, with coils and padding. Or, you can choose a standard size crib mattress that is more simply made of foam or covered vinyl. Whichever you choose, just remember that firmer is better when it comes to crib mattresses.

What is a standard crib mattress size? Standard crib mattresses should be 52 inches x 27 inches x 6 inches. Some mattresses may vary about one half an inch on the height measurement. Because the dimensions of the standard crib mattress are finite, any crib sheet will fit all standard crib mattresses. If you are worried that the bedding you have doesn’t fit standard size crib mattresses, check the dimensions to reassure yourself. You will see that almost any bedding and mattresses for standard cribs will fit a standard crib mattress.
