Dinnerware Cutlery

Dinnerware and cutlery are two everyday things that we take for granted in our kitchen. If we want a nice meal on our Italian dinnerware, we just use it and forget about it. However, the plates, knives and forks we use everyday can become dangerous in the hands of babies.

Kitchen cutlery sets are great to have, but they are usually stored in butcher blocks on kitchen counters. Consider taking your cutlery off the counter and storing it in a drawer with a child safety lock. Your finest nautical dinnerware is adorable when displayed in your kitchen, but is best kept in kitchen cabinets well out of the reach of curious babies.

It is hard to limit a baby’s exposure to dinnerware/cutlery because it is necessary for every day use. Here are some tips and tricks to help you minimize and danger that dinnerware/cutlery may pose to your baby.

Dinnerware Used To Feed Your Baby

At some point you will begin feeding your baby off of plates. Some dinnerware is better than others for feeding baby. If you are doing the feeding and baby is not touching the dinnerware, consider using durable, casual dinnerware. You do not have to go out and buy special plates for baby. Corelle dinnerware is a great choice for casual dinnerware. It is lightweight, durable, chip resistant, and is dishwasher and microwave safe. In other words, perfect for feeding baby. Fiesta dinnerware is another good choice. It is also durable and comes in many bright colors that will keep baby’s attention during feeding time.

If you are letting your child feed herself, you will want to invest in some melamine dinnerware. Melamine is durable plastic dinnerware that is virtually unbreakable. The only real drawback to melamine is that it cannot be micro waved. Gibson dinnerware has a line of children’s melamine dish sets that are adorable and perfect for your baby. You might want to try some square dinnerware made out of melamine to catch your child’s attention.

You can even make dinnerware fun for your baby. For example, you could make a tradition of using Christmas dinnerware during the holidays. This way, your baby will look forward to the special dinnerware every year.

Cutlery

Babies should NEVER use knives. Do not leave knives where babies can reach them. Cut up your baby’s food for her and never even let her see the knife because she will want to play with it. Chicago cutlery makes nice sets of knives and cutting boards that can be stored safely in drawers away from baby’s reach.

Sometimes knives have uses other than meal times. You and your spouse may want to start a knife collection for your baby when he gets older. Frost Cutlery and Atlanta Cutlery offer a wide array of collectible knives and swords. These will be meaningful to baby when he is older, but make sure to keep them locked away for now.

Dinnerware/cutlery is only a danger to your baby if you let it be. Always keep an eye out wherever you are for stray pieces of dinnerware/cutlery that could be a danger to your baby.
